General Qualifications

The Army Medical Specialist Corps offers various career opportunities for those meeting its general qualifications, aligning with its commitment to professional excellence and readiness. Applicants must be United States citizens or naturalized citizens for the Regular Army or permanent residents for the Army Reserve.

Each specialty within the Corps has specific educational and certification requirements. For example, Occupational Therapists must hold a master’s or doctorate in occupational therapy from an accredited program and have certification from the National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapists, along with unrestricted state licensure. Physical Therapists must possess a doctorate degree in physical therapy from a Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education program and maintain an unrestricted state license for at least one year before the selection board date.

Dietitians need to be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration. While state licensure is not a requirement for this role, applicants can apply to the selection board within six months of completing their dietetic internship. Physician Assistants must have a master’s degree from an accredited program and certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants, with the option to apply within six months of graduating from their PA program.

The Corps also offers graduate student programs in collaboration with Baylor University, such as the Occupational Therapy Doctorate, Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy, and Master’s Program in Nutrition. ROTC Cadets are eligible to apply for these student programs and can also seek an educational delay to attend civilian graduate schools for SP Corps specialties.
